CCA’s inaugural swim season was a great success! Here is a recap of the competitions:

Pre-Regionals (Jan. 14, Prosper):
The Pre-Regional Swim Invitational had 17 schools competing, including from the highest divisions. This was, Sophomore, Jasmine Nordstrom’s 1 st meet back in 3 years, and she put out an outstanding performance. She finished 2nd overall in the 100 Breaststroke. A senior from a Division 1 school just touched out 1st. Jasmine also swam the 500 Freestyle (20 laps!!) and was 3rd overall. On the last lap, Jasmine was in an all-out sprint race, stroke for stroke, with a girl who had gotten in front of her and Jasmine beat her in the end by a second. This showed a lot of effort and determination even when physically exhausted. In both events she got first among the Division 2 and 3 schools. CCA placed 7th out of 17 schools representing Divisions 1, 2 and 3.

Regionals (Jan. 27, Mansfield):
Jasmine won the 200 Freestyle by 2 seconds!!! She also got 3 rd in the 100 Breaststroke qualifying in both events for the State Championship meet! CCA finished 11th at Regionals in District 3. This was the 1st time CCA qualified for the State Swimming Championships! Only 16 swimmers can qualify in each event and each swimmer can only compete in a maximum of 2 events.

State Championship (Feb. 6, San Antonio):
There were swimmers from 40 schools from across the state competing. In the 200 Freestyle, Jasmine finished in 2 nd place with a time of 2:08.36. This was 5 seconds faster than her personal best time, beating the next girl by more than 4 seconds! She hit all of her predetermined goal split times. In the 100 Breaststroke she finished in 3 rd place swimming a 1:14.29. (This swim time would also place 3rd in Division 2.) She had an epic race touching out 0.04 before the next girl, who is a Senior! In both events she made the Awards Ceremony podium where she was honored and presented the Silver and Bronze medals. “I’m just so proud of her because she really gave it all and swam with tons of heart. Her physical and mental preparation, attention to detail, determination and competitive spirit set her apart as a real athlete and champion,” said Coach Nordstrom. CCA finished in 19 th place in the state, beating out 21 other schools (as well as all the other schools who didn’t make it to the State meet).

Jasmine said, “I’m really grateful to CCA and Coach Fitch for the opportunity, to Coach Nordstrom for being such a great coach, supporting and training me, and for all the encouragement I received from others. It was a really fun and very exciting season.”

Jasmine’s swimming background:
Jasmine is no new-comer to competition. She started on a competitive swim team when she was 5 years old. She trained 5 days/week, 2 hours/day and competed in age-group swim meets in Southern California every other weekend. She qualified for the Far Western Championships in the 100 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke and 50 Backstroke. This is one of the fastest and most prestigious meets for USA Swimming representing all of Colorado and westward. She also qualified for the highly competitive Southern California Junior Olympics in the Rose Bowl in 9 events in 2020! She still holds the record for the elite Evolution Racing Club for the 10 and Under Long Course 200 Free Relay in Southern California. Her mom, Coach Nordstrom, has coached her older sister and her half the years since Jasmine was 5. Her sister, Tiffany, placed 3 rd at State in the 100 Freestyle and 3 rd in the 100 Backstroke. She swims for Metroplex Aquatics.
